Mark Ogren
Director of Congregational Excellence

E-mail Mark Ogren:

Welcome to the Center for Congregational Excellence. This ministry (and my passion) focuses on starting new faith communities and renewing existing congregations. The local church section of the Book of Discipline begins with this statement “the mission of the church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Local churches provide the most significant arena through which disciple-making occurs.” Whether starting new faith communities or renewing existing ones, this office works to empower local churches to “make disciples of Jesus Christ.”

A native of Iowa, I am an elder in the Virginia Conference with a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University and a Master of Divinity from the Divinity School, Duke University.

I have served appointments in the Virginia Conference since 1977. My appointments  included serving: Toms Brook-Mt.Olive (Winchester District), Wesley (Winchester District), Farmville (Farmville District), Fredericksburg (Ashland District) and Reveille (Richmond District). I served for five years as the district superintendent of the Ashland District and began my appointment as the director of Congregational Excellence in July 2011.

My wife, Margie Turbyfill, is a retired elder in the Virginia Conference who serves as the director of the A. Purnell Bailey Pre-Ministerial Program at Randolph Macon College. We have two children — Elizabeth, who lives in Richmond, and Matthew, who lives in Washington D.C.
