Search reopened for director of Ministries with Young People
Search for the Virginia Conference director of Ministries with Young People has been reopened. The director of Ministries with Young People works as a team member with other Connectional Ministries directors under the supervision of the director of Connectional Ministries. Mt. Bethel UMC, Crimora, burns to ground
Prayer is requested for the members of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Crimora, Harrisonburg District. The church burned to the ground the night of Friday, Sept. 30. The Rev. Event to equip African-American congregations to be Oct. 14-15
The second in a series of events to support and equip African-American congregations in the Virginia Conference will be Oct. 14-15 at Norfolk UMC. Consultants at the event will be the Rev. Virginia Conference Christian Educators Fellowship is sponsoring “A Day Apart in Christian Education” Thursday, Oct. 20, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Duncan Memorial UMC, Ashland. The Rev. The Society for Wesleyan Studies' fall event Oct. 23-24 will focus on Small Group Ministry. The Rev. Kevin Watson, Ph.D. candidate at Perkins School of Theology and Professor of Historical Theology at Seattle Pacific University, will help participants dig a little deeper into our Methodist heritage by “Reclaiming the Class Meeting” as a vital tool for making disciples of Jesus Christ in the 21st century. ‘After Hours’ weekend camp to be Oct. 28-30 at Westview on James
Westview on the James in Goochland County is offering “After Hours,” a weekend camp for 7th- through 10th-graders, Oct. 28-30. Youths will explore the light and life of Jesus in worship and Bible study and will choose from a variety of camp activities to help create their schedules for the weekend. Cost is $95 per person. Conference UMW to hold annual meeting Oct. 29-30 at VUMAC

Middle School, High School fall retreats to be at Eagle Eyrie
The Conference Middle School (Nov. 11-13) and High School (Dec. 2-4) Fall Retreats will be held at Eagle Eyrie in Lynchburg. The retreats will include a Youth Service Fund “walk for change” that will help youth to gain mission awareness. Churches are encouraged to recruit a college student or young adult to lead a small group. Registration fee, curriculum, training and e-briefing will be provided for all small group leaders. ERT training scheduled in Richmond, James River districts
United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Early Response Team (ERT) certification training is scheduled for the Richmond and James River Districts. Courses will be taught by authorized UMCOR trainers. Registration fee is $55. Payment is due on the day of training.

Ethnic delegates wary of restructuring plan
A proposed restructuring of The United Methodist Church is facing criticism from some of the people who will vote on whether the plan moves forward. A gathering brought together more than 60 United Methodists of color who will be delegates at the 2012 General Conference and the Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference. Most of the discussion centered on what delegates termed “troubling” legislation to consolidate nine of the denomination’s 13 general agencies. More …

Prayer Service to be held prior to hearing for ‘Rotunda 11’
United Methodists are invited to attend a prayer service at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the main entrance of the District of Columbia Superior Court, 500 Indiana Ave. NW, Washington D.C., prior to the status hearing for faith leaders arrested in the U.S. Capitol rotunda this summer. The so-called “Rotunda 11” were arrested for a civil disobedience action while praying for a just, compassionate federal budget. The status hearing will be at 9 a.m. in Courtroom 321. Jim Winkler, general secretary, United Methodist General Board of Church & Society, and the Rev. Bob Edgar, United Methodist elder and president of Common Cause, are among the “Rotunda 11.”

Mississippi delegation endorses Bill McAlilly for bishop
The Mississippi Conference delegation to the 2012 General and Jurisdictional Conference has unanimously endorsed the candidacy of Rev. Bill McAlilly for the office of Bishop. McAlilly has been a delegate to five Jurisdictional and four General Conferences and will lead the 2012 Mississippi delegation.

Alabama-West Florida delegation endorses Larry Bryars for bishop
With a unanimous vote, the 2012 members of the Alabama-West Florida Conference General and Jurisdictional Conference delegation endorsed the Rev. Dr. Larry Bryars as their episcopal nominee. Since 2004, Bryars has served as senior pastor of Shalimar United Methodist Church in Shalimar, FL. The AWF annual conference elected him in June to lead the 2012 General/Jurisdictional delegation. He has been elected a delegate to three General Conferences and five Jurisdictional conferences.

GBOD offers free webinars for church leaders
The General Board of Discipleship (GBOD) is offering three free webinars for church leaders during the next two months. “Principals for Church Renewal” will be offered for pastors Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 1:30 p.m. (EDT). Topics include defining Christian transformation, disciplines for Christian transformational leadership, leading a movement of hope, and introduction to a process to enable church transformation. Registration deadline extended to Oct. 19 for Exploration 2011
Registration has been extended until Oct. 19 for Exploration 2011, an event for young adults who sense God's call to ordained ministry as a deacon or elder in The United Methodist Church. The event will be Nov. 11-13 in St. Louis. Sponsored by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry, Exploration 2011 is open to young adults age 18 to 26.
