This weekend, May 17-18, United Methodists around the world will go out into their communities to do mission events to help "Change the World." Last group of clergy to receive new e-mail addresses
This week, clergy in the Farmville, Fredericksburg and Harrisonburg Districts will receive notices regarding their new e-mail addresses. This is the last group of new clergy e-mail addresses to be issued. The conference is providing e-mail addresses ending in @vaumc.org to every active clergyperson in the conference. More ...

Foundation names Clark president, Carper vice president
At their May 8 meeting, Virginia United Methodist Foundation (VAUMF) Board of Directors elected Stephen Clark to serve as president, effective June 1. Clark will replace Dave Thompson, who will retire June 1. Clark has served as the Foundation’s Planned Giving Officer since June 1, 2013. The Foundation also hired Bryan Carper as vice president for Stewardship Ministries, effective May 28. More ...

July 19 will be United Methodist Day at Kings Dominion
Saturday, July 19, will be Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church Family Fun Day at Kings Dominion amusement park, with discounted tickets to the park available for United Methodists. Cost is $31.99 per person for ages 3 and older. Children ages 2 and under will be admitted free. To purchase tickets online, go to www.kingsdominion.com and enter promo code KDUMC14. The special discount tickets will be valid June 26-30, July 1-6, and July 18-20. During the discount days, two gospel music events will be held on the park grounds. Six Virginians receive Exemplary Teacher Awards
Six Virginians were among 77 professors and instructors at United Methodist-related schools, colleges, universities and theological schools who received Exemplary Teacher Awards from the United Methodist General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. Honored were: Lana A. Whited, professor of English and pirector of the Boone Honors Program, Ferrum College; Mari Ishibashi, associate professor, Political Science, Randolph College; Andrew Harriman, Upper School faculty, Social Studies, Randolph-Macon Academy; Edward D. Showalter, professor of Economics and Business, Randolph-Macon College; Laurie Houck Hudson, assistant professor, School of Nursing, Shenandoah University; and Joyce B. Howell, professor of Art History, Virginia Wesleyan College. More ...

Resource Center to hold Inclusion Concert June 8
The Resource Center will hold its Inclusion Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at Anointed New Life Baptist Church, 1616 E. Parham Rd., Henrico County. The event will be a celebration of the various ways we praise God — a tapestry of different cultural expressions of worship and song, dance, mime, drums and more. A massed choir will come together for the event, and anyone is welcome to rehearse and sing. Rehearsals will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday June 3, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 8175 Pleasant Grove Rd., Mechanicsville; 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at Laurel Park United Methodist Church, 2700 Hungary Rd., Henrico; and 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Anointed New Life Baptist Church. The Resource Center, an ecumenical agency headquartered in Richmond, has been designated by the Virginia Conference Common Table as the organization to help Virginia Conference congregations find and use media resources. Peace with Justice Sunday is June 15
Sunday, June 15, is Peace with Justice Sunday, one of six churchwide Special Sundays with offerings approved by General Conference. Celebrated the first Sunday after Pentecost, this special offering enables The United Methodist Church to have a voice in advocating for peace and justice through a broad spectrum of global programs. Virginia man named lead lawyer for GCFA
The board of directors of the General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA) selected Steven Lambert as General Counsel at the May board meeting. Lambert is currently a retired partner with Foley & Lardner, LLP in its Washington, D.C. office, and has been with the firm since 2001. Lambert, a former member of Annandale UMC, was a member of the Virginia Conference Common Table Task Force 2001-2003 and was president of Virginia United Methodist Pensions, Inc. from 1992 to 1996. He was chair of the Ferrum College Board of Trustees 1992-2001.

3-day event in D.C. to introduce United Methodist Seminars
Youth group and young adult leaders are invited to attend a three-day "In Focus" familiarization event, July 23-25, in Washington D.C., to introduce the United Methodist Seminars on National and International Affairs. The event will explain how to organize and lead a group for these tailored study experiences in the nation's capital. More ...

North Alabama needs Early Response Teams
North Alabama is in desperate need of Early Response Teams to help with response to recent storms and tornadoes in multiple areas of the state. Forms for individuals and teams are available on the Disaster Response page of the North Alabama Conference website. Individuals are also needed to volunteer for Multi-Agency Coordination Centers located in Adamsville, Bessemer and Graysville. Duties would be taking information from storm victims for needs and referring them to the conference office. It only takes brief training to be able to help out. North Carolina needs volunteers to help with tornado damage
United Methodist Volunteer In Mission (UMVIM) work teams from the Virginia Conference are invited to assist in the response to tornado damage suffered in the North Carolina Conference in mid-April. These teams should be led by persons who have received ERT training or UMVIM Team Leader Training. The Foundation for Evangelism is seeking nominations for the 2014 Distinguished Evangelist of the United Methodist Church Award. With this honor, the Foundation celebrates a United Methodist clergy or lay person whose personal ministry in evangelism is recognized throughout the denomination. "Lord, Teach Me to Pray — Practical Applications for Prayer" will be offered three separate times at three different locations: this Saturday, May 17, at Timberlake UMC, Lynchburg (Click here to register); Saturday, Aug. 23, at Williamsburg UMC, Williamsburg (Click here to register); and Saturday, Oct. 25, at St. Thomas UMC, Manassas (Click here to register). The Virginia Conference will host Safe Sanctuaries training June 18-19 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center (two days prior to beginning of Annual Conference at the same location). The Rev. Joy Melton, author of Safe Sanctuaries resources, will lead this two-day workshop. One CEU available for participating clergy and lay professionals. This training will not replace or meet requirements for Clergy Ethics II training. Registration is $25 per person or $80 for a team of four from a church. ♦ 'Helping Hands' mission for children - July 7-8, 17-18, 24-25, Aug. 25-26
“Helping Hands” is a two-day mission experience for rising 4th - to 6th-graders, parents and adult leaders. It will be held on four dates at four different locations: July 7-8 - Fairview UMC, Danville (click here for more information); July 17-18 - Marquis Memorial UMC, Staunton (click here for more information); July 24-25 - Woodlake UMC, Chesterfield (click here for more information); and Aug. 25-26 - Springfield UMC, Springfield (click here for more information). Kids can learn about mission opportunities and the importance of being a caring Christian. Cost of $36 per person includes a t-shirt, meals, snacks, mission supplies and overnight stay.

♦ LEAD youth leadership training - July 25-Aug. 3
The Conference Council on Youth Ministries invites youths from across the conference to participate in LEAD, a 10-day leadership training immersion experience, July 25 - Aug. 3 in Roanoke. District and local church youth councils are encouraged to select as many as 3-5 youths who are willing to commit to this 10-day intensive experience. Upon their return, they will implement covenant action plans to utilize newly developed leadership skills in their districts and local communities. More ...

An event at Randolph-Macon College Aug 3-5 will help high school students explore a calling to ministry. "SERVE: A Missional Exploration for Ministry" will have a work camp focus and include small groups, Bible study, recreation, special worship services and more.
