2013 Annual Conference

June 21-23
The Hampton Roads Convention Center
Hampton, VA

4 Cans 4 Conference

For the fifth year, each clergy and lay member of Annual Conference is encouraged to bring ‘4 Cans 4 Conference,’ canned goods or boxed dry foods to benefit local area food banks. This year, the food will go to the Peninsula Food Bank.

Requested are: one can of vegetables or fruit, one can of meat or fish, one can of soup or stew and one can with a pop-top. In addition, there is a need for cereal, boxed/packaged mixes (Hamburger Helper, pancakes, soup, etc.), rice, instant potatoes, powdered drinks, peanut butter and jelly.

“Between now and the beginning of Annual Conference in Hampton in June, please start to set aside at least one can of staple goods per month - so as to avoid the last minute rush,” said the Rev. Jim Earley, project organizer. “Make it a youth group mission, or a UMW emphasis, or a Sunday School class project, a men's group activity, or just a personal expression of faith.”

Earley said he hopes to collect more than five tons of food (one ton for each year the collection has existed). Over the last four years, about 9,000 to 9,500 pounds of food have been contributed each year.

As you are able, bring your cans in reusable tote bags, rather than plastic bags. This will reduce the amount of trash winding up in the local landfill, and the bags will go directly to recipients of the canned goods you bring.

Do not bring home-canned items, out-of-date cans, glass jars, damaged cans, fresh fruits/veggies, or already-opened or partially used supplies. Also, please keep in mind that "exotic" things are not really helpful.

For more information, contact Earley at pastor@walkerchapel.org or at Walker Chapel UMC in Arlington, (703) 538-5200.
