2016 Annual Conference offering to support ministries in Cambodia, Brazil, Mozambique, Virginia

Each year, members of local churches are encouraged to raise money for global mission projects designated by the bishop. The pastor or lay member of Annual Conference from each church will take that money to the Annual Conference session where it will be collected during a special time of worship and celebration of mission. Bishop Young Jin Cho recently announced that the 2016 Annual Conference special offering goal will be $150,000 and again focus on both international and Virginia-based mission needs.

In light of the urgent need to fund long-term disaster recovery for victims of the Feb. 24 tornadoes, Bishop Cho has requested that the $50,000 of the Annual Conference offering designated for mission work in Virginia be redirected to disaster response.

"The Feb. 24 tornadoes that swept across Virginia caused loss of life, injuries and severe property damage in three districts of our conference," Bishop Cho said. "Our conference Emergency Response Teams were on scene almost immediately in the Farmville, James River and Fredericksburg districts, helping with emergency repairs and debris removal and offering a caring presence. Now, Volunteers in Mission teams are gearing up for long-term recovery work that will include repairing damaged homes, rebuilding homes that were destroyed and offering Christ’s love and hope to those who suffered loss. This is a process that could take as long as three years and could cost as much as $2 million."

"Last month, I issued a letter asking for contributions to the Virginia Conference Disaster Response Advance Special #5037 to help provide needed personnel and equipment not only for this current disaster, but also for disasters that may occur in the future," Bishop Cho added. "But the need is so great, I am also re-directing part of this year’s Annual Conference Special Offering — $50,000 —to help those in our communities as they seek to rebuild their homes and their lives."

The Annual Conference special offering goal includes:

Methodist Mission in Cambodia - $50,000
We want to continue our commitment to the rapid growth and expanding influence of the Methodist Mission in Cambodia. Funds will support the training of lay and clergy leadership, purchase of property and construction of new church buildings.

Brazil Methodist Church -$25,000
Brazil has the largest number of “street children” in the world. The Shade and Fresh Water Project is a national network of centers developed by the Brazil Methodist Church to keep children off the streets by offering supervised activities and after-school programs for children between 6 and 14 years of age in cities and communities across Brazil.

United Methodist Church in Mozambique - $25,000
The United Methodist Church in Mozambique is growing rapidly and needs leadership for the hundreds of new United Methodist churches being established throughout this southeastern African nation. Your gift can help fund resources for training laity in two conferences in that country.

Virginia Conference Disaster Response - $50,000
On Feb. 24, tornadoes swept across Virginia causing loss of life, injuries and severe property damage in the Farmville, James River and Fredericksburg districts. Conference Disaster Response volunteers are gearing up for long-term recovery work that will include repairing damaged homes, rebuilding homes that were destroyed and offering Christ’s love and hope to those who suffered loss. This is a process that could take as long as three years and could cost as much as $2 million.
